Clothing is a huge part of expressing our personality and individuality. It’s also a huge factor in determining the style direction of your session. Yes, even for the guys! Believe it or not – locations, our style of shooting, and the final portrait art all branch from your clothing selections, too.
Use the following resources to plan your portrait-perfect outfits.

This is the place to look. Below you will find a link to the Guys Pinterest Style Board.I’ve added some men’s style pins to inspire you with a variety of looks for your session outfits.
Don’t have a Pinterest account?Ask your mom, girlfriend…etc to use their account.Create a new board with your own ideas. Start pinning the things that reflect your style and interests.Pin anything from fashion styles to location types you like.Be sure to share your board w/me: @arphotographyllc
When selecting outfits, I always suggest a variety of looks. Try to include both casual and dressy styles as well as styles for multiple sessions. Even if your session takes place in the summer, it’s always great to have an outfit with a layered fall look too!
There’s no better way to ruin your session than ill-fitting clothing. Make sure your outfits fit your body well. Slouchy shoulders in shirts or pants folding over because they’re too big are never a good look. Yikes!
I suggest having four complete outfits for your session. We won’t use all of them, but it’s nice to have a selection to choose from.
Complete outfit = pressed outfit + shoes + accessories like a watch or hat…etc
Grooming before a picture is beneficial for guys and anyone, really. for a few reasons:
Grooming before a picture demonstrates attention to detail and self-care. It shows that you take pride in your appearance and are conscientious about how you present yourself in various situations, which can be appealing to others.
When you feel good about how you look, it naturally boosts your confidence. Grooming before a picture can help you feel more confident and comfortable, which often translates into a more appealing presence in the photo.
Grooming helps in presenting oneself at their best. It ensures that hair is styled neatly, facial hair is trimmed or shaped, and clothing is tidy. This can greatly enhance one's appearance in a photograph, making them look more put together and attractive.
The importance of oral hygiene cannot be understated. It's not just about having a bright smile; it's about maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Yes, brushing your teeth twice a day is crucial, but it's only part of the picture. Regular use of dental floss and an antiseptic mouthwash can help prevent gum diseases, tooth decay, and bad breath. Also, consider investing in a tongue scraper for complete oral care. Don't forget to replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
From the top of your head to the tips of your toes, personal hygiene is paramount. Start your day with a refreshing shower to awaken your senses and cleanse your body. Pay special attention to areas that are prone to sweat, like the underarms and the groin area. Opt for a soap or body wash that suits your skin type and avoids products with harsh chemicals that can dry out your skin. Lastly, remember to keep your hands clean by washing them regularly and thoroughly throughout the day.
A well-maintained mane is a sign of good health and care. Whether you have a head full of curls or a simple buzz cut, maintaining your hair is essential. Shampooing and conditioning your hair regularly can keep it clean, manageable, and dandruff-free. The choice of hair care products depends on your hair type and any specific concerns you might have like dryness, oiliness, or dandruff. Don't forget to brush or comb your hair daily to distribute natural oils evenly throughout your hair, adding a healthy shine and preventing scalp build-up.
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This helps unclog pores, prevent acne, and allows for better absorption of skin care products. It also promotes skin rejuvenation, resulting in a brighter and smoother complexion. Depending on your skin type, you should aim to exfoliate 1-2 times a week. For sensitive skin, once a week or less may be enough, while oily skin types may benefit from twice a week. Remember to follow up with a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.
While a full haircut may not be necessary every week, regular trims can help maintain a neat appearance. This is particularly important for areas like the back of your neck and around your ears where hair can grow unevenly. Weekly touch-ups with a good quality trimmer can help keep your hairstyle looking fresh and well-maintained between professional haircuts.
*NOTE: Do not get a new haircut the week of your scheduled session. Leave time for hair to grow out in case the haircut didn't turn out like expected.
Nail care is an often-overlooked aspect of men's grooming. Clean, well-trimmed nails not only enhance your overall appearance but also prevent the accumulation of dirt and bacteria. A weekly routine should include trimming your fingernails and toenails, and cleaning the undersides with a nail brush or file. A clear or matte nail polish can add a finishing touch for a clean, well-groomed look.
